Biography

Ragnall mac Gofraid was a son of Gofraid mac Arailt, and grandson of Harald Sigtryggrsson of Limerick. His parentage is confirmed in an entry dated 1005 in the Chronicon Scotorum recording his death as 'Ragnall son of Gotfrith son of Aralt, king of Inse Gall dies' . The territories of Inse Gall at this time would have included the islands of the Hebrides and the Isle of Man. [1] [2] [3]

Ragnall was born into the Dynasty of the Uí Ímair, a Norse-Irish dynasty based in Dublin, Ireland, who dominated the coasts and islands of the Irish Sea, including the western coast of Scotland for several hundred years, from the mid 9th century.

The death of 'Ragnall son of Gofraid, king of the Isles 'is recorded for the year 1005 by the Annals of Ulster. [4] He is said incorrectly by some commentators to have died in Munster. [5]
